Gothic Church of St Andrew in Nelahozeves

Dalibor Prix

Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(2)

The medieval Church of St Andrew in Nelahozeves (Melník District) is a single-nave structure with a narrow pentagonal presbytery and a rectangular sacristy on its northern side. It is less renowned than the nearby Renaissance castle on the promontory to the south of the church, built by Florian Griespeck of Griesbach, or the native house of the composer Antonín Dvorák. The limited body of older and newer literature does not provide a uniform dating of the building’s origin within the 14th century, and the church has not been placed within the broader architectural and stylistic context. Completed this year (2024–2025), the general reconstruction...

The Karlštejn Treasure: Between Tradition and Sources
Reconstruction of History and Transformations of Interpretation

Filip Wittlich

Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(2)

The Karlštejn treasure, consisting of 14th-century silver and gilt artefacts kept at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, has been asso ciated with Karlštejn Castle for more than a century. However, recent available sources indicate that this connection is likely more legend than verified history. The reconstruction of its acquisition, exhibitions, and expert debates reveals how the story evolved over time, became institutionally established, and gained significance in the interpretation of Bohemian medieval goldsmithing.

Reconstruction of Karlštejn Castle
A Hidden Source

A unique depiction of Karlštejn Castle’s medieval appearance, probably from the late 14th or early 15th century, forms part of a previously unknown variation of the plan for the castle’s Lesser Tower. This version features fragments of wooden structures from Friedrich Schmidt’s estate. Although the drawing was not a primary iconographic reference during the reconstruction planning, it was likely used during the renovation of the corridor connecting the towers.

Reflections on the Architectural Form and Role of Karlík Castle

Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(2)

This article presents the findings of archaeological investigations at the small Karlík Castle in the Prague-West District, which current research considers the smallest castle founded by Charles IV. New evidence indicates that the existing understanding of the castle’s origins needs significant revision. During the research, relics of the palace and perimeter walls were documented. The castle’s function continues to be debated. Based on its size and architectural style, the authors hypothesise that it served as a residence for the lower nobility. This hypothesis aligns with contemporary references about the castle.

A Testimony on the Relationship Between Old Routes and Selected Locations in the Lower Posázaví Region

Lukáš Slabý, Pavel Bolina

Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(2)

Given the lack of extensive archaeological research into noble residences and urban centres, one possible approach to gain new insights is to analyse their connection to the former main roads that once passed through the landscape. This method is particularly valuable when there is very little chance of uncovering new written sources or architectural elements that could shed more light on the origins or functions of the sites in question. The article discusses the results of the analysis of connections between the selected locations in the lower Posázaví Region and the long-distance routes passing through it, aiming to provide further significant arguments...

A Sunken Lane as Memory

Milena Hauserová

Památky středních Čech 2025, 39(2)

The preserved section of the series of sunken lanes in the forest north of Benešov exemplifies how tangible remains of earlier roads are maintained. It offers valuable material for identifying, naming, and critically analysing old road features in the landscape, which contribute to their heritage value – both in the traditional sense of preservation and in broader perspectives. The chosen collection of field relics serves as a practical example that sparks a discussion about the value of this heritage type and, indirectly, about how to shape its future fate.
